Many modern cars already come equipped with basic car alarm systems. However, vehicle owners may want to upgrade to a more comprehensive car security system, especially if they live in an area where crime is pretty high. Likewise, those who own older car models may want a car alarm installation for the same reason.
In general, car alarm installation cost vary depending on the type of security system you want installed, the complexity of the car alarm installation, and the labor rates. Car alarm installation cost ranges between $30 and $1,300, and may even be more expensive if you are having an advanced security system installed. If you want to save money, a diy installation will shave off labor charges. However, installing car alarms can be quite difficult.
To help you get started on the right track, keep in mind to prepare. Preparation is the key to a smooth car alarm installation.
If you are going to install the car alarm yourself, make sure that you have, at least, a basic knowledge about electronics. Installing a car alarm also requires the right tools (a soldering iron, crimper, stripper, voltmeter, drill and bits, and the like), the correct wiring schematic, the ability to properly take apart and reassemble the dashboard, and the patience to exactly follow the instructions.
Also, do not fire away without mapping out a detailed step-by-step plan of attack first. A successful security system installation should read, “Ready, aim, fireâ€, and not, “Ready, fire, aim.†You do not want to hurry. Car alarm installations do not need to be completed all in one day. Break the tasks in small portions for a sure success. For instance:
Step 1 — look for a spot to mount the siren and control module. After hooking the valet switch, LED indicator, and siren to the control module, connect the wires securely. Then, connect the ground leads and the power to the control module before testing.
Step 2 — lace the sensors in their mounting locations before connecting them to the control module. Test their coverage area and make adjustments prior to fastening them down.
Step 3 — for keyless entry, tie into the power door lock circuit and door triggers, and tie into the parking light circuits and dome light. When they are all working properly after testing, you can secure the control module in place.
If you have time to finish everything in one day, that‘s all right. But then again, do not rush it. Also, it is not advisable to drive your car without securing any loose wiring first.
In addition, keep your battery from running down and your components from short-circuiting by disconnecting the negative battery cable before mounting your system components. But keep your battery cable connected while testing switches and wire functions. Vehicles vary so be sure to read your vehicle owner‘s manual to find out if there are any other procedures to follow when disconnecting battery cables.
